About the Club

  • Athletic Bilbao won La Liga for the first time in 1930 and 7 more times afterwards, making Athletic Bilbao (or Athletic Club de Bilbao, which is its proper name) the fourth most successful club in Spanish football.

  • Although Athletic Bilbao was officially founded in 1903, its history goes a little deeper. The then-new game of football was brought to the city of Bilbao by two different groups of people: British shipyard workers and Basque students returning from their studies in Britain (hence the English Athletic instead of the Spanish Atlético).

  • Each of these two groups founded its own football club in 1898. It was not until 1903 that they decided to join forces and carry out a merger that would lead to the creation of Athletic Club.

  • Among Spanish cities, Bilbao is perhaps the one with the greatest football heritage and its club was dominant in the country's early history.
Led by visionary English manager Fred Pentland, Athletic won their first two La Liga titles in 1930 and 1931.

  • Curiously, Athletic won their next league title in 1956, just after Zarra left the club. After those days of glory came a long drought, and the club did not return to the top of Spanish football until the appointment of Javier Clemente as manager in 1981.

  • While this tradition is quite unique in the world of football, it did not stop Athletic from becoming a great club. In addition to its 8 Liga titles, the club has also won over 20 Copa del Rey trophies.
